So many of us are working from home. I’m lucky to have the option to choose the office or to work from home. I honestly love this hybrid model since I thrive in both in-person office environments but also enjoy the flexibility of staying at home.

Over the past few years, I’ve picked up a few best practices to boost productivity when working from home. Here are a few of my tips!

1. Get dressed

If you want to stay in your pajamas, know you’re not alone. It’s easy to wake up, reach for your phone and to start checking emails. Getting dressed (you can still wear comfy clothes) helps put you in “work mode”. It prepares you mentally and jumpstarts your day. In my experience, online meetings feel more engaging when cameras are on, so I like to make an effort to look and feel presentable.

2. Find a dedicated work space

Having separate work and personal spaces can help create healthy boundaries at home. It might be tempting to work from your couch or dining room table, but this could take a huge toll on your productivity and posture. Creating a dedicated work space with an office desk, ergonomic chair and good lighting will set you up for success. Have fun with your space and personalize it, since you will be sitting there for hours!

3. Set a routine

Daily habits become weekly routines. When you work from home, it’s important to set expectations for yourself. Having a schedule with a start and end time will help create boundaries between your work and personal life, preventing burnout. Establishing a routine will give your brain and body consistency leading to healthy work patterns.

4. Take breaks

Protect your calendar and block time for lunch and breaks. This is so important especially if your team is based out of different timezones. I love going on 15–30 minute mental health walks which reframes my thinking, improves my concentration and reduces stress.

5. Overcommunicate!

There is a sense of isolation when you work from home, so it’s important to communicate and maintain your relationship with your manager and colleagues. Don’t hesitate to ask for what you need, communicate with your team to clarify project expecations and progress. Improve connectivity and stay engaged with your team through whatever communication platform your company uses. Maintaining strong work relationships will make you feel less alone when working from home.
